Georgetown

Georgetown of formerly British Guyana is fairly clean, has an interesting old center, and a population that includes African blacks, East Asian Indians, Chinese, Natives, and remnants of whites, some from the days of the British occupation, others from all over the globe.

I spied this little guy from the veranda of my hostel, across the street

I may have mentioned, Reggae music is the lifeblood of the black inhabitants. I comes at ypu from everywhere, day and on the weekends well into the night. On Fri and Sat night this guy in his very costly modified vehicle would stop at the end of the street, in front of the old graveyard, and open it all up and to start it was almost painfully loud. The wattage he was pumping out was incredible. After a bit he toned it down to just loud. He was playing a local radio station for all of us.

The old town center is dominated by the judicial palace, an imposing structure, a source of considerable pride and the seat of the Supreme Court of Guyana

The impressive Department of City Engineers and City Hall, both in need of some loving care and a coat of paint

I took these two pictures from the veranda of the Kanhai's center of an old English graveyard

St George's Cathedral
Another bulding the locals are proud of, the National Library

carved coconuts

Yup! Christmas is waiting, even here where summer is just around the corner. Dec 21, summer solstice.
A Catholic church, to round out the large collection of churches, temples, and mosques in town.

The English are still selling these military trucks here. Steering on the right, all-wheel-drive, and perfect for the interior

Not everything in the old-town is old style
And another new mosque going up. The usual story, a fast growing community

Why, it's Chandra's C-section. I had to go all the way to Guyana to find out about that..

A very nice City Mall, and a Vaswani has to have swans on his veranda, and Chinese lanterns. Oh the parties...
